Meet our Lens Friends - Makenzie (Mrs. Cunningham)

Aug 25, 2020

It’s back to school season and we wanted to give a spotlight to one of our amazing ambassadors: Makenzie. She is a 4th grade teacher in Virginia and is currently working on developing her nine-week curriculum for in-person and virtual school. Mrs. Cunningham, as her students know her, is one busy-bee but she took some time to chat with us about herself.

Do you have any exciting plans coming up?

I’m super excited to meet my new group of students. The beginning of school is some of my favorite moments even if this year will look so different.

You shared with us that you’re a 4th grade teacher, why did you decide to pursue teaching as a career?

I have a passion for educating the next generation. I love watching the light bulb moments happen in the classroom. This passion has always kept me going, even through hard times.

With back to school season starting up, and so much uncertainty surrounding it, what do you hope to see in the 2020-2021 school year?

I hope to see our communities rise up and partner together like never before. It has been beautiful watching our local community rally behind our school district and teachers. I’m excited and pray that will continue throughout the year.

What’s been the most rewarding part of teaching?

Having students come back and visit just to say thank you, share moments and favorite memories with me warms my heart.

Do you have any notable memories of students that you’d like to share?

There is not one particular moment but it is the best feeling when the students come to the realization that I am here for them and truly support and love them. It’s the best feeling in the world when they see me more than someone telling them what to do.

For me, I want all of my students to walk away feeling supported, educated, loved, and a better citizen. It’s so rewarding watching them continue and change their world in a positive way.

How can parents/students help teachers right now?

Communication and a positive partnership will be key to our success this year. Now more than ever we need the parents and community to link arms with us (teachers) to build a solid education for our students. This process is new for everyone and we will make mistakes, but it is vital that our community gives us grace and we move forward for the sake of every child.

How has ordering with 1-800 Contacts made your life more simple/convenient?

1-800 Contacts is the best way to order affordable contacts for my lifestyle. As an educator I tend to put myself last through the day-to-day operations. 1-800 Contacts notifies me when I’m getting low and makes it simple to reorder.

Do you have any memorable customer service experiences with us?

About a year ago, I needed help with purchasing contacts using my insurance. I couldn’t find the document on the website. I called in and not only did the person help me find the document but also filled it out for me, only requiring me to sign.

It was the best! Completely quick and efficient.

Why is having good vision important specifically for students and teachers?

Having the correct eye care is vital to our education. When a student is struggling it is the first thing I question. Most of the time this is the exact problem, and when it is adjusted it changes their educational path.

What did you think of our ExpressExam?

I still compliment this service every time I refer someone. This system was extremely accurate and impressive.

When Makenzie manages to squeeze in some alone time you can find her reading, hiking, or developing her side business. Makenzie is on Instagram at @makcunningham1.

We’re so grateful to have Makenzie as part of our LensFriends community and we look forward to seeing how she makes the most of the 2020-2021 school year.
