Contact lens solution FAQ
Solution is to contact lenses as water is to humans: it’s the stuff of life. Contacts need solution to stay clean, happy, and hydrated. And functional.
Accordingly, we’ve put together answers to a few frequently asked questions about contact lens solution. Enjoy.
How often should I change my contact solution?
You should use fresh solution each time you clean and store your contacts. Yes, that means you should change your solution daily if you wear contacts daily.
Don’t wear contacts daily? Some contact lens solutions will let you store your lenses in a case for up to a month, while others last for as little as a week or a day. Even with solution that can last for up to a month, you should consider changing it more frequently, just to be safe.

How much contact solution do I need for a month?
Ten-ounce bottles of solution last about two months when used daily, so…five ounces? Give or take. Expect to use more solution each month if you’re really making it rain on your contacts and in your case. That brings us to our next question.
How much contact solution should I put in my case?
Generally, you should fill your contact lens case with enough solution to cover your contacts completely. With that said, you should read and follow the instructions on your solution. If your dad told you that instructions are useless, consider this the exception.
How much contact solution can I bring on a plane?
As with any other liquid, you can bring bottles of up to 3.4 ounces of contact solution on a plane. Because typical travel-size bottles last only a week or two, we recommend taking several bottles on longer trips. Read this blog post for more information about flying with contacts.
