Night vision contacts lenses? Yes, please.

A group of researchers out of the University of Michigan have developed a detector that can sense the full infrared spectrum using a new technology known as Graphene (a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb design).

When asked how this technology would be used, Zhaohui Zhong, an assistant professor at the university said, “We can make the entire design super thin. It can be stacked on a contact lens or integrated with a cell phone.”

While the technology of infrared detection will most likely find its way into the hands of the military and science communities first, the real question will be how to market this technology to the general tech markets.

“If we integrate it with a contact lens or other wearable electronics, it expands your vision,” said Zhong. “It provides you another way of interacting with your environment.”

There’s no denying this technology along with Google’s Glass and smart contact lens technology will become more of a reality in the near future. Especially as we continue to advance in the medical and technology fields.
